💡 Tips to optimize your impact

  • Balance brown materials (leaves, cardboard) and greens (peelings)
  • Turn your compost regularly to aerate it
  • Maintain moisture like a wrung-out sponge
  • Cut large waste to speed up decomposition
  • Avoid meat, fish and dairy products
  • Join the Compostons Ensemble association in Grosbreuil to share your experiences

🧮The basis of our calculations

Our tool is based on recognized scientific data and coefficients validated by ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency):

🍃Compost production: On average, 100 kg of organic waste produces about 40 kg of mature compost after decomposition and natural evaporation.

💚CO₂ emission reduction: Each kilogram of composted organic waste avoids the emission of 0.5 kg of CO₂ equivalent compared to landfill disposal. This difference is explained by the reduction of methane emissions, a gas 25 times more harmful than CO₂.

💧Water savings: Compost improves the water retention capacity of soils. One kilogram of compost saves up to 8 liters of irrigation water thanks to its absorption capacity.

🚛Transport avoided: Less waste to collect means fewer garbage truck trips. We estimate that a collection truck carries an average of 500 kg of waste per round.

💰Cost to the community: The treatment of one kilogram of organic waste costs about €0.15 to the community (collection + treatment + disposal).

🌍Equivalents for better understanding

To make these figures more meaningful, we convert them into everyday equivalents:

  • Car: 1 km traveled emits about 120g of CO₂
  • Tree: An adult tree absorbs about 22 kg of CO₂ per year
  • Smartphone: A full charge generates 8g of CO₂
  • Shower: One minute in the shower consumes 12 liters of water

📚Scientific sources

Our calculation coefficients come from studies conducted by:

  • ADEME (guides on home composting)
  • INRAE (National Institute for Agricultural Research)
  • The IPCC (greenhouse gas emission factors)
  • Eurostat (European environmental statistics)

🔬Calculation method

The calculator takes into account:

  • The composition of your waste (kitchen biowaste + green waste)
  • Your composting efficiency (85% by default, adjustable according to your experience)
  • The seasonality of your green waste production
  • The number of active weeks per year (holidays, temporary stops...)

⚖️Limitations and transparency

Our calculator provides estimates based on national averages. Results may vary according to:

  • Your climate region
  • The quality of your composting
  • Local waste collection specificities

🌱Hidden benefits not quantified

Composting brings many other advantages that this calculator cannot measure:

  • Biodiversity: Enrichment of soil microbial life
  • Education: Raising awareness among your surroundings about environmental issues
  • Autonomy: Reducing your dependence on chemical fertilizers
  • Well-being: Satisfaction of concretely participating in environmental protection

🤝The multiplier effect

Imagine if every household in Grosbreuil adopted composting! Your individual gesture, multiplied by your neighbors, becomes a formidable lever for ecological transformation of our territory.

📈Maximize your results

  • Balance your inputs: 2/3 wet materials (peelings) to 1/3 dry materials (leaves, cardboard)
  • Turn regularly to accelerate decomposition
  • Adapt according to seasons: more green waste in spring, more food scraps in winter

🎯Join the movement!

By sharing your results on social media, you inspire other people to take the plunge. Each new composter multiplies the positive impact of this ancient practice brought up to date.
